Well, I originally mastered several steps before applying paint to this project. I guess I call it a project, because it took more planning, and thinking about how I wanted to tackle this one! Trying something NEW is supposed to be good for us, right?
I have a nautical chart as the first layer, under the luscious brushstrokes...and fluid waves of color. Then, oh on!!!! ...the ripples from the applied chart, that I thought might give it character, seemed not so interesting, they seemed worse. I'm not sure if the paint created more, or if the ripples just seemed exaggerated with the smooth calm waves.....
I did want some ripples so that the nautical chart would be seen, I didn't really want "perfect"...but somewhere along the way I didn't feel so good about them...the adrenalin started pumping.... the fear began to trickle in...well, I slapped that fear away! ZAP! I'm going to find a solution....that's what artists DO!
I will get creative! (well, let me sleep on it awhile... and think about what I will do)
Thinking about a solution did help, some..but nothing helps as good as doing...experiment, try something else. If those ideas don't work, keep trying...do more... change it and do even MORE!!!
Still on the easel..... |
I decided, that instead of very calm, slithering waves in the distance ... to turn it up a knotch! I pulled out the trusty ol' palette knife!!! I enjoyed mixing colors and scooping up all the sea glass colors, then laying the paint onto the canvas creating waves, reflections and making movement of the water come alive! I brush, then used the palette knife...then blended, and scraped until I felt it was the way I wanted it. I think it actually gave the painting more depth, more to look at and enjoy.
The finished (I think...) painting! |
I ended up adding more paint, more texture by using the palette knife...and more colors to give it more depth and "sunshiney-shimmer"...
I really do like the compass, the chart symbols and map-like qualities, showing through in parts, through-out the painting!
Well, I think it was worth it...I tried something new, tackled it, and created a way to have it turn out to my liking!!
Now, onto another painting... !!!!!
Keep Creating, Joan

Yup! This is excellent, you swam across... and I could hear the waves in your paint. Wonderful :-)
I love it! Instantly calming <3 It is so beautiful!
LOVED reading about your process!!! Thanks so much to Kristen for giving us flyers the link!!! I love the water (born, raised, and lived in the Seattle area for almost 60 years) Your painting is stunning whether it's finished or not.
Beautiful! When I can paint moving water, I know I will have "arrived" as a painter. Bravo!
